Cancellation of BT Contract?

My elderly mother has seen her BT phone charges skyrocket because she's on BT Basic but for the last 3 months has been regularly phoning her sister who is in hospital.Hopefully she'll go back to low usage within the next 3 months.
I would like to put her onto a BT calling plan to reduce her costs temporarily but BT offer only a 12 month contract.
Does anyone know what the penalty would be for cancelling the contract early?

From October, it'll be £2 for each remaining month of the contract.
Bear in mind the cost of line rental is considerably more when you leave BT Basic.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
