They are destroyed by temperatures over 46 degrees centigrade - but not much chance of getting that sort of temperature in your bedroom, even in a heatwave with your central heating on.

Get rid of the mattress, sheets, duvet and all, clean the carpets thoroughly (or rip up and replace) and start again.
    Clean all pets thoroughly.

Ring your local council, None of the sprays/chemicals you can pick up from a supermarket/pet shop/vets etc will touch them.

It's advisable to catch one and take it to your council offices. Ours will (or at least used to) deal with bedbugs for free, but will charge for other kinds of bugs etc.

In the meantime I'd suggest you sleep in a filled bath, and don't cut your finger nails for a while (you'll need them for a serious amount of scratching)

Just been reading Bill Bryson's latest book. There is a section in there on how things like Bed bugs and Lice have become a major problem again in recent years.
One of the factors causing this is washing clothes at lower temperatures to "save energy".

He quotes Dr John Maunder of the British Medical Entomology Centre:

"If you wash lousy clothing at low temperatures, all you get is cleaner lice"

Steam cleaner and wash bed-linen at 60 degrees minimum.

had this problem in my btl 3 years ago.

Tried daily steam cleaning, diy killer spray, diy killer powder - did not help.

End of the day, at the same time got: virtually all metal beds (no cloth box ones), got the occupants to boilwash their clothes and got in southwark council (£150) to spray poison the place.

One positive factor is that I already had laminate floor, so no way for the bugg!rs to hide.

DDT apparently work well, even though it is banned. Not that poisonous to humans either, but did not have a source :(

I personally would not recommend that council affiliated service again, due to attitude towards the tenants when spaying and then refusing to come back for a free visit due to a tenant leaving a box on the floor
