theres already a long thread on this and how to stop it
  • Thank you to those who posted about Rewards First - I discovered a seemingly random sum of £14.95 on my credit card bill in August 2011. The reference stated "Rewards First" but I could not think what it was for. I joined Rewards First which touted themselves as offering a free cashback and rewards when I was buying a train ticket online with my credit card.

I have just discovered in these threads that this is a trap to get you to, unkowingly spend money, the company have basically piggy backed as you say, the credit card details, which to me amounts to deception and theft. I have cancelled out of this membership now-and I wasnt even aware I was a member of anything, Sneaky, and deceitful in the extreme, I will be asking for money back (have emailed them_ and will take it to trading standards. Thanks for alerting me to this
  • In October I found that I had had 4 payments of £14.95 (Total £59.80) to Rewards First on my credit card. Here's what happened and my refund in full.

I cancelled my subscription on their web page and this is a copy of the emails sent back and forth.(I've had to put spaces in the links as I'm new on this forum and can't post links yet.)

I have just noticed that you have taken £14.95 from my credit card for the months of July to Ocotber 2011.
I request you refund me the £59.80 you have taken.
I was not made aware that you were going to charge me this fee. Looking at Money Saving Expert it is clear that you are deliberately misleading people when they sign up. As you can see I made no use of your offers, as I recall your site was impossible to navigate.

I will be contacting my credit card company to complain.

    Dear C,

Thank you for your email call received on 20 October 2011.
Please find below an explanation of how you became enrolled in a membership with Rewards First. In addition I have also attached a visual representation of the option form that was completed in order for a membership to be set up.
Your membership record indicates that you agreed to try Rewards First when you clicked on a banner ad presented on the thehut. com website after an order was placed. This banner offered a £10 Cash-Back on your order as a welcoming gift when you join up to Rewards First. To become a member you have to physically input your details in the empty field provided and this includes your payment card details.

Additionally, by enrolling in the trial membership, you agreed and acknowledged that after the 30 day free trial membership period, you would be billed the monthly program fee.

You could have opt out of this membership by clicking on No thanks button.

A welcome e-mail was sent to the e-mail address **@hotmail. com you provided at the time of enrolment. This e-mail would have also explained the terms of the membership as well as the benefits you are entitled to. This email was sent on 19/06/2011 at 14:57:02

Unfortunately, your request for a refund has been declined, as you were clearly advised that you enrolled in a 30 day free trial after which you would incur a monthly membership fee of £19.95for the service.

If you have any queries now or in the future, please feel free to contact Rewards First by telephone or email during normal office hours (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) using the contact information provided below.

    Yours Sincerely

    Regarding you email.

I do not accept that your banner advert made it clear that I would be charged a monthly fee. I was unable to process the offer to claim the £10 discount as the process did not work.

I request that you refund me the £59.80 you have taken within 7 days.

If you do not I will take you to the Small Claims Court with the evidence from Money Savings Expert and The Mirror websites as well as other forums online to show you rip people off regularly.

Please supply me with your registered company name and address.

    Regards.

  • if you go onto any site to buy anything that says you can get £10 off your next order or anything like that stay well clear!!!! i ended up being joined to a website called rewards first and the first i new about it was 12 months later when each month £14.95 had been taken out of my account which led to a some of £165 in total i rung them and though they delted my account so no mkore money came out they dismissed anything i had to say and when asking me security questions all it was is my hotmail address and name which they would have got from the hut where i brought a xbox head set, they have told me i would of had to sign up to there site but i never did and never got a confirmation email threw they now say they will pay me £58 80 back a s a good will gesture whichg is disgusting as they would get to keep over £100 of my money if they do this to every one they would be minted we need to stop them from doing this to people and make sure anyone who has got conned get there money back!!!
  • I am very grateful to all who have posted on this forum about the scandalous rewards first company. My 17 year old daughter had 2 transactions on her bank statement, both for £14.95 to rewards first. I was furious with her at first because she didn't have a clue where the money had gone. I thought it was another case of teenagers being unable to manage their money. Then I googled rewards first and was even more cross that she had entered into a contract with these people. She managed to convince me that she hadn't and luckily I spotted the money saving expert entry in the search results. I am appalled that this has been going on for well over a year now and despite several victims saying they have contacted trading standards, nobody has yet put a stop to it. We contacted HSBC and they have said they will prevent anymore money from being taken out of her account. I will also be contacting trading standards.
    Thanks again.:
  • IT GETS WORSE. If you join via Flybe, the airline which charges you extra for everything including even paying by debit card or their own Flybe credit Card, they charge you £14.99p a month and there is NO BENEFIT to this "Rewards 1st" at all. Anyone can get better deals by just buying from Amazon - and Amazon give a great responsive service unlike this mob. By the way, anyone who likes the look of Flybe's Rewards For All service which offers FREE flights if you spend several thousands on their credit card - forget it. The flights are NOT FREE at all, they charge you a fortune for luggage, for using a card to pay - what a scam that is as at the airport I offered to pay bt cheque or cash and they refused!! - and of course they charge you taxes. But worse, even for the small saving you do make by using your points - guess what - THEY NEVER HAVE ANY FLIGHTS AVAILABLE! I rang this morning and said, "OK, just give me ANY flight between this afternoon and 6 months from now to fly to the Isle of Man - any time" and they couldn't, "No flights have been allocated for Rewards Points" I was told. so take my advice, get a card with actual cash back. Like Alliance and Leicester as one example.
  • IT GETS WORSE. If you book this “Rewards 1st” through Flybe, the airline that charges you for every conceivable extra including even paying using their own Flybe Card then they charge you £14.99p a month, and you get no benefits whatsoever. Anyone can get better deals by simply buying from Amazon, and Amazon have excellent responsive customer service should you need it. Another warning, if you are tempted to apply for a Flybe Credit Card, as they advertise they will give you FREE FLIGHTS, don’t be tempted, there are no such things! Yes you can get points if you spend several thousand pounds but they simply hardly ever have any flights available. As an example I’ve spent hours and hours looking all last week and phoned them (EXPENSIVE) a couple of times so eventually I phoned and asked, “Please just tell me when a rewards for all flight is available to the Isle of Man ANY TIME from this afternoon or any time at all in the next 6 months”. The answer was they couldn’t see any! They then asked a supervisor (my expensive call ticking away) and came back with, “Keep Looking, we do definitely allocate some to all routes”. Take my advice, ignore this card and take out one which gives actual cash back, like Alliance & Leicester as an example.
  • I have just realised that my Name and Card details were via FlyBe and they have been taking £14.95 per month since the details were given to them last June. I phoned my card issuer NatWest and spoke to the relevant department and they just simply said they have hundreds of complaints every month about this company and were sure that some of the cardholders must have informed the police. It seems to me that Trading Standards should be closing this company down.
  • I booked tickets from Flybe and was offered cashback at the end - if you accept you are signed up to Rewards first, who then sign you up to Credit Ratings Matters without your knowledge or consent, and the next thing you know is when you check your credit card statement. I have managed to cancel the subscription but have not yet got my money back.
This practice apprears to be widespread.
It is beyond me how companies like Flybe deal with scammers like Rewards First, who were investigated by the OFT in 2011 for just this sort of thing.
