I wanna buy some more memory for my laptop!

My laptop is sooo slow at the moment, I am trying to find the cheapest price for either;

512MB DDR SODIMM PC2100 266mhz 200pin

or

1GB DDR SODIMM PC2100 266mhz 200pin

If there is a huge difference between the 512mb and 1gb I will just go for the 512mb.

I am willing to buy from anywhere thats cheap and reputable!

Thanks! :money:

    Try LowestOnWeb, Ebuyer, Dabs.
  • Crucial.com. Doubled my laptop memory for £25.00 inc vat shipping etc with full instructions.

I also second crucial.com. They have a very good reputation. I would definately have 1Gb in my machine although the performance increase isn't likely to be as significant. Its not something you want to be changing a second time though.

Also, with laptops, whilst memory makes a difference if you have very little, the other factor is the hard drive. Check to see if it is 4200 RPM drive. If it is, there is a good likelihood you'll be able to upgrade to a 5400 RPM drive (check the interface as you'll probably only be able to use ATA133 if its an old laptop). The hard drive makes a big difference in performance. ;)

I have just bought 1gb memory from ebay for £65 inc delivery which isnt bad. I was thinking of upgrading my harddrive as well but i am not too sure as how to go about it. It wont affect the warranty as that expired a while ago.....is it hard and could i upgrade from 40gb to 60gb/80gb?

    I have a Toshiba Sattelite Equium a60.

    I have a Toshiba Sattelite Equium a60.

Toshiba no longer sell the Satellite A60 on its website as far as I can tell.

From searches on the internet, it appears to be a 4200 RPM hard drive with an EIDE interface:
    http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-SAT_A60_1561_C_2800_40GB_256MB_COMBO_ATHEROS_G_XPH

Changing a hard drive on a laptop is easier than a desktop in much the same way that upgrading memory on a laptop is easier than a desktop.

I would recommend you get something like the following item:
    Western Digital Scorpio 60gb Eide - 2.5 Lp 5400rpm 8mb Cache
    http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/79433

It will increase the speed of your laptop greatly in conjunction with the memory increase.

However, before you do so, you need to be sure of the specifics of your laptop limitations before doing so.

You need to know the following:
    1) What speed is the EIDE interface - 100 or 133. (This might not be a huge problem as the drive is backwards compatible).
    2) What is the maximum hard drive size that the motherboard supports. You might not be able to upgrade to a 60GB or 80Gb if there are limitations because the hardware is old.
Email Toshiba Tech Support to find this information.

I get the feeling that the above will be the maximum that you can put in your machine but it will be a worthwhile upgrade. After this upgrade you should look towards a new laptop in the future - its not worth upgrading the other components such as CPU. ;)
