Cavity wall insulation

Hello

I was put off having this done years ago by a workman who said having it can make your property damp.

Since then I have been told that they use different material that doesn't do that now ....

I'm still not convinced though after watching ,not so long ago, on Watchdog I think it was an item where a property had had Cavity Wall Insulation and the resultant damp was appalling and there was nothing that could be done about it.

My next door neighbour is having it done as I type which has made me think again about having it done

Can anyone shed any light on this subject? .....

Cant say it caused a problem when we had it done, I wouldnt have thought the material they use today is hydroscopic so damp shouldnt be a problem

I think what you saw on watchdog was that the wrong insulation had been used. I can't see any problems nowaday with cavity insulation plus you may be eligable for a grant, worth checking up on.

I think it depends on how your house was constructed. My MIL's house is 1930s and I read up a lot about it before she had it done. A few people said that you shouldn't do it in a 1930s house, so we decided to err on the side of caution and not get it done. We told Warmfront, but they didn't tell the contractors and they turned up one day and did it anyway! We did have a problem with damp a few months afterwards, but they came back and put an airbrick in or something (unfortunately I wasn't directly involved) and it has been fine since then, so fingers crossed.

I had mine done when I built the house in 1977. Never had the slightest problem with it. The back and side of the house have quite a high exposure to wind and rain. Never had a problem with the insulation of the previous house that I also built and lived in for 10 years, either. There are rather too many old wife's tales going the rounds about the subject, I think.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

Wall insulation will not cause a damp problem, but in very specific circumstances it can highlight an existing damp problem or other design issue or unnoticed defect.

Blown fibre is least likley to cause any issues, and pumped in foam or poly balls more likely - in specific situations only

Watchdog and any other TV programme are going to dramatise a very isolated and specific set of circumstances in the name of good family viewing
