car accident - advice please

Hi all...

I was in an accident this week and essentially it was my fault (rear ended someone) - what I'm concerned by now is the damage of my car and what procedures follow after an accident and whether I need to look out for certain things with the insurance etc.

The car itself is quite damaged, it was only a 30mph crash but it seems to have damaged it quite alot, the front is pretty crumpled, radiator broken, wings need repair, windscreen etc.

Now because it happened on a dual carriage way the police came and had it taken away to their recovery and now the insurance company says they will take it to their approved repair shop.

I'm fully comp.

The car is a 09 plate hyundai i20 1.4petrol comfort, metallic paint.

Where would be the best place to find out the market value? I would on assumption believe it to be around 7500.

I need some advice detailing what I need to do if the car was a write off and also any opinions/ help on if the insurance company drags their heels on moving the vehicle (accident was on monday).

Any other help is much appreciated.

I will check back in case there are any questions.

Thanks again.

Mutty.

In anticipation of a settlement negotiation you can start looking for evidence to show what you will pay to buy a similar car with similar age/mileage/condition etc. Also base your evidence on getting the car from the same market you bought it from (ie compare like with like eg main dealer/private purchase/auction etc)

If it is written off your excess will be deducted from the settlement, together with any premium outstanding.

Which Insurer are you with ?
  • Hi Mutty,

They have taken the car to an approved repairer to access the damage by an engineer. Depending on what damage has occurred will determine the out come of it being a total loss. The best place to check valuation is Autotrader for a rough guide this is fee and Parkers but i think there is a charge. If it has been early Id as a total loss it can take any thing from 6 weeks. If they decided that they can repair the damage then you will have to pay your excess and voluntary excess. Which you will of agreed to when you took your policy out.

If they do decide to repair you are entiled to use your own garage but will not be intitled to a c.car unless your own garage can do something for you but this will not be down to the insurance for c.car from your own garage.

You will only get a c.car for the duration of repairs and is ususally a cat A car like a Ford Ka unless you took like for like out on your policy and if it is a total loss you wont be intitled to car. If you are unsure of anything phone your broker and they will advise or if you got your insurance out directly with the underwriter speak to them thats what they are therefore to help and advised

    Hope this helps

    Thanks
