Hi,
I bought a Quad Disc sound system recently. It has a separate AM and FM cable antenna. The FM one is there but the AM isnt, so it does not pick CLEARLY ANY MW/AM stations. What can i do?
Cheers

AM is abysmal anyway but if you do want to receive it then a random length of wire will work - the longer the better. If there are two terminals then you can either earth one or just set up your wire as a loop. You'd normally get a small loop supplied - here's an example on eBay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AM-LOOP-ANTENNA-BRAND-NEW-MW-LW-Aerial-Ariel-Loop-/270607493010?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_ConsumerElectronics_SpecialistRadioEquipment_SM&hash=item3f0176a792 (I picked one with a halfway decent picture rather than the cheapeast)0

Didn't AM used to require a ferrite rod antenna with a coil round it?0

Do you mean this is a system made by Quad, the HiFi Manufacturer, or something else?
DO you have an instruction manual? If so, does this offer any advice on what to use as an AM antenna? If not, do you have a maker/model no. so that we can advise further.....0 -
It will have that inside for tuning but they don't work too well inside a metal or metalised case which this probably is. They are also directional. That's why external loops are provided with them although they'll usually work after a fashion without connecting one.Didn't AM used to require a ferrite rod antenna with a coil round it?0 -
Something like this is required:-

Don't forget the earth rod. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Here's a bunch of designs...

They are all for enthusiasts though and most people don't want that sort of eyesore sitting on top of their HiFi
