Trigger Happy

I reckon it is habit as much as triggers sometimes. I have had to 'train' myself to think of my holiday the next time I think 'it's not much, I can afford it' or 'I have been really good, i'll treat myself'.
A spending diary is also a good way of training yourself out of spending. Put the amount in the diary before you get to the checkout - it helps me change my mind!! I then feel good about not spending unecessarily.
I think it's like dieting - one won't hurt definitely does!!!
Good luck.

I dont even know what happened with me today. I got up early, walked to the post office, and local sainsburys simply for oreo cookies, came out with more............
then came home and had loads to do today, have done about 20% of it......... then went to drop something off at work, and ending up spending another £35!
that could be me you are talking about!! I am sitting here crunching on some Arnott's TimTam chewy caramel biscuits from Tesco..........I only went in there for toothpaste and some painkillers........and only went to Tesco to get petrol in the first place - I didn't even have to go in the store!!
The number of times I have been into town, gone to the post office (often posting ebay stuff)and then had had to walk past Sainsbury to get back to the car and thought 'well, you might as well go in and get some bits to get your car parking money back'...........ahem......so I go in and spend money on 'stuff' just to get £1.20 back from them........stupid I know....triggers??? Bored, happy to have sold ebay stuff, fancy something nice for dinner.......

I guess all I can hope for is that whatever U've ended up spending my money is either:
Necessary
Useful
Cost effective i.e wouldve bought anyway
Mood elevating.......
However on reflection............... 5% of purchases today have met any of that criteria!Wealth is not measured by currency0 -

That would be my standard non DFW way of shopping.
I know I can eat for £X a week
I know that I dont need Y or Z or even W
so why doesnt that apply when I get to the till and hand over the money?
On the bright side the one thing I have learnt is that I cant find happiness in the bottom of a make up bag - but I think I'm currently exploring several other opportunities instead
I will be good starting tomorrow I promiseThe early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0 -
maybe it is just habit.
I admit today I popped in to town to get a birthday card went to the card shop and then popped in to boots (spent some of my points so no cash changed hands) and then iceland bought nothing and then superdrug. Bought some headache tablets.
I had no need to go in any of the other shops but I did why becuase I thought I would have just have a look.
A habit I must stop. If I did not have to get the card I would have not gone in town.
At least the parking was free and I will get £1.25 I spent on the card back.

I went into town today and am a bit wracked with guilt as had decided to not buy Holland & Barrett overpriced stuff any more ... but wandered in whilst Mr Pincher was in Gamestation and ended up spending nearly £10 on seeds, teabags and aloe vera juice etc!!! It's not a huge amount compared to what I used to spend but really eats into food budget.
Poundworld is a weakness for me - go in just for a browse and I think I find it calming as sometimes go in as a 10 minute break from work (sad, I know!) but I always come out having spent at least £6! I suppose a lot of it are essentials e.g. cleaning stuff, pot noodles and little presents for Mr Pincher...
Spent £4 on games machine in Yates... rarely win but we enjoy playing that together.
Then went to Superdrug and spent another £6...
Then on the way home bought 2 magazines and a newspaper...
Definitely a senseless binge! Was feeling happy today so it wasn't to enhance my mood this time.0 -
Miss Penny,
Do you feel guilty for it now?
It feels to me like a vicious circle, theres the breaking the habit, and theres the recognising the triggers.
Agree with Calley though, hadnt even planned on going into town, but got a phone call and needing to drop something into work, and then just wandered aimlessly and ended up spending money
Sometimes I think I'm never going to get to the bottom of it with myself!Wealth is not measured by currency0 -
A little guilty but I asked myself if I would return anything but I wouldn't :rotfl:
I think it's the browsing shops that's the problem for me!0 -
Yeah me too!
I dont seem to be able to go to the one shops I need, I have to "mooch"....
WHY?
I must search and destroy the moocher in me!Wealth is not measured by currency0 -
I think with me I think it's a case of something to do, I find browsing a bit calming and I think that there could be some bargains and discounts to be had that I wouldn't like to have missed out on!
Maybe we will be cured someday!
I love your thread by the way! x0
