Sold car on Ebay, a bit of a tax dilemma
Hi there guys hopefully someone will be able to help me.
I have just sold a car on Ebay after agreeing i would tax it for the buyer at his cost. What i didn't know is that you need to be insured for a car in order to tax it.
Is there an easy way to do this rather than having to buy some insurance and wait for the forms coming through? The cost of this will be high also as i am young and insurance is not cheap.
I really don't want to upset the buyer as its taken a few listings to finally sell.
Thanks.
(P.s. i know i should have looked into it before agreeing but i really wanted the sale :rotfl:)

You can buy temporary insurance, one day should not cost you very much.

Thanks for that missile, I'll probably end up asking one of my parents to get a days insurance for there. They require age 21+ im only 19
Might see how friendly the buyer is and see if he'll just tax himself though too XD0 -
Alternatively, ask him to get his insurer to send a certificate to you so that you can take it to the Post Office.0

if you get the buyer or yourself to do a hpi check you get 7 days free insurance through aviva it costs £19.99 and there is no lower age limit..would be worth ringing hpi to check that this offer is still available..i did this when my 18 year old bought a car from ebay about 2 months ago..ck0

It's pretty normal to ask the buyer for his insurance so you can tax the vehicle for him/her. At least that way you also know they're driving your old motor away legally and obviousl insured.
Nailed on - no doubts - no regrets..........0 -

isn't there a legal obligation to the seller to make sure the car is insured before its driven off ? If so its very much your problem should they be stopped or they have an accident.Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?0 -
From someone who:
sold a car, was then was persued by the police for not stopping and reporting an accident as well as being involved in a robbery, and then was persued by the other driver who was suing me for whiplash and god knows whatever else, plus all of the unpaid parking tickets and then the subsequent removal and impounding costs.....
get his insurance certificate to do it for him or give him the money to tax it himself.
When we bought a new car we had to give them our Insurance so they could tax the car for us.
Thank god for going to Somerfield that time and day and paying by card - it was the only thing that proved I was not the driver of the car that day as I was 60 miles away doing my shopping and hid to sign for it when I paid by debit card so it proved I was there and not in the car. It was a very long and stressful 4 months, that is for sure!!
And photocopy EVERYTHING before hand them over or that you send it to the DVLA so you can prove someone else bought it. Someone also bought a car from us and put a false name and address on the documents. We had a scanner copier at home so when the parking and impounding costs started (we learned from the above!!) we had proof we had sold it.
We even sold a car to a dealer and had problems with parking tickets. Nightmare!!0 -

No , which is why it is so important to get all the paperwork done correctly when you sell (completion of V5 etc, get full contact details of buyer, receipts etc.)0
