Valuation for a remortgage question.

How does a valuer conduct such a survey? What do they base it on? Is it normally a local one?
We are in the process of remortgaging and it depends on the valuation now. Our house is one of a kind on our street and area as it has been extended over the years from 3 to 5 bedrooms, extended kitchen, 30 foot garage, land bought at the back to extend the garden so no other house on the street is the same now.
I am assuming they will come into the house and not just drive by. The house was bought 6 years ago now - will they use that info?
We had it valued 2 years ago but not recently so only have a very rough idea of how much it is worth.
Thanks
I have contacted the broker who is also going to ring me back.
