Which bank for a joint account?

Can anyone recommend a good bank to get a joint account?
My OH banks with HSBC and we tried to open an account this morning. Despite bringing all the ID their helpline had told me to, the local branch refused to open an account as I hadn't brought enough with me  When I had an account with them before, i had loads of problems, so they are now out.
I bank with Nationwide/Abbey and my OH doesn't want to bank with them.
I have Barclays as my business account and they've stuffed that up so impressively that I won't put my personal finances with them.
Neither of us want to bank with Natwest due to some horror stories about our local branch.
We just need something basic - we want a debit card each, and online banking is a must. That's it really
Any recommendations?

If you want to stick to one of the big 5, I would recommend Lloyds TSB Plus Current Account which pays 4% and also allows you to do a 8% 2 year regular saver ( 1 per person) which is excellent. If not bothered by size of bank then both Alliance & Leicester and Coventry are both good bets. If you go for A&L make sure you get someone on this board to recommend you to take advantage of the A&L referal bonus (£50)0

I was thinking of transferring my Joint account from the LloydsTSB to A&L to take advantage of their 0% o/d rate. If there's a way to get the bonus too, that's great.
For the record though, I'm more than happy with LloydsTSB's service. Their internet banking is excellent and I'm lucky to have two branches within walking distance of my house. My branch is excellent, friendly and helpful staff. I don't really want to close the account, but as they say, money talks...0 -
I'm with the Co-op, who are excellent, and OH & I have just opened a joint account with Smile (part of the Co-op), and I'd recommend them too.0

Thanks everyone

I'm leaning towards a Lloyds or co-op account as we have local branches for both0
