Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago, I was harvesting my pink elderflowers from my black elder in the garden ready to make cordial.
As part of this, I broke off one of this years new shoots and thought I would pop it in water so I could propagate it later and plant another bush on my allotment plot which will hopefully provide some shelter from the wintry sea breeze that whistles between the sheds.
Within a day, it had developed tiny nodules which, two weeks later are now inch and a half long roots!
I was surprised it rooted so easily - regardless of the fact that elders seem to pop up everywhere given half the chance. I guess I thought the black one might be a bit fussy!
So, I am off tonight to plant my new elderflower bush into the allotment.
Anyone else have some easy to propagate stories to tell??

I hear lavender is easy to propogate, but I'm not too sure which bit of the plant I should use.0

I had a side shoot on one of my tomato plants last year that had somehow hidden from me. When I eventually noticed it it was about 10 inches so I put it in a jar of water for a couple of days then stuck it in a pot of compost and it rooted! (unfortunately there was no happy ending as they all got blight and died but I think it would have fruited otherwise!)
My mum has done the same successfully with a young buddleia branch that snapped off.0 -
Yes, the tomato sideshoot thing works. I stuck a 15" one in a pot that had a strawberry plant in it to see if it would root and it now has 5 tomatoes on it, although it hasn't grown very much otherwise. Still that's 5 tomatoes I wouldn't have had.
And why in a strawberry pot? It was the next pot in line of course :rotfl:
But to add to the list of easy to propagate things - mint. One left over stalk from a supermarket packet is now several plants large enough to keep me in mint tea. And that's happened in just a couple of months.

I think it is best to use the top soft growth. Some info here.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

About three years ago I bought a packet of deep purple Morning Glory seeds which I are supposed to be annuals. So at the end of the year I just left the seed pods to brown, die back from the trellis and eventually pulled them out. Now every spring I find the seed pods have all popped, the seeds have happily lain dormant in the soil all winter and they all pop up again in the spring at the first hint of some sunshine.
Another good plant for self seeding in our garden is antirhynums, I find they self seed easily too and pop up everywhere.0 -
ooo so many! Penstemons are very easy, just take about 2-3inches of top shoot, strip off the bottom leaves, and stick in water for about a week or so. Easy! Same method works for Busy Lizzies, and Verbena.

I propagated our rose bush by cutting off a non-flowering shoot that was going mad and poking it into the earth near to the mother plant. I kept it watered over the summer and it made a whole new plant.
Spurred on by this, I did the same with a gooseberry bush.0 -
I've heard that blackcurrant is easy to strike. I've pushed some sticks into the ground I hope they root. This spring I cut some willow to make a frame for my sweet peas to grow up. every one had taken and had lots of leaves on them."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

Hydrangeas, gooseberry & currants all grow easily from prunings just stuck in the ground.0

My sisters dog chewed a piece off my blackcurrant bush so i stuck it in the ground and it took straight away and i`ve had berries off it this year. Didn`t get any last year but wasn`t expecting any then.
I`m going to break off a couple later this year and do the same as i really want to increase my berry production. My main shrub has been in 3 years and i`ve had 4lb of berries off it this year. Not bad for something from the poundshop
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon
