New Front Door + Side Windows

I had a guy from Crystal Windows round yesterday after speaking to one of their reps in Homebase.
We want a new front door, including 2 small windows (~300mm x 1200mm) either side and a smaller window above the door.
The guy measured everything and then asked us about door style, etc. We went for the basic (cheap) style. He then consulted a cost chart, totaled everything and informed us it would cost £3,300 to install.
We weren’t happy with this price. The sales guy 'explained' that he might be able to do it cheaper by putting it through as commercial rather than retail, and quoted ~£2,200 for this.
We told him we had budgeted around £1,000 to £1,500 for the work after checking a few web sites, etc. He then told us that the door alone would be around £1,200 at trade price, but said he'd be willing to do the work as a 'loss leader' for a price of £1,600. We had to sign up there and then though. At this point we said our goodbyes.
I'm assuming most (or all) of what he was saying was complete rubbish. The initial quote seemed outrageous. Is this correct? How much should I expect to pay for this?
Thanks

Unbelievable!
Just had a call from someone at their office telling me there's been an 'unusual' set of circumstances that will allow them to do the job for £1356.
Why can't they just cut all the bs and give an honest price?!?0 -
Where are you...?
Dont deal with bodgers and losers...Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Firstly, trade doors don't cost £1,200 or nobody would be able to make money.
Secondly, saying he'll put it through as "trade" rather than "retail" is generally rubbish however what he might be doing is giving you an inferior product without a guarantee - be careful!
Look for a company that provide UPVC doors with steel reinforced frames and panels that contain MDF or some other wood composite to ensure the panel is as strong as the frame.
Generally it'll cost £1,000 - £1,500 for a quality door with installation and guarantee.
For a composite door (an even stronger, more secure model), you're looking at paying more.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
