4 years until they can actually be removed from the licence although they no longer count after 3 years.0

It depends on the offence (eg drink driving its 11 years, speeding is 4)
The three years your son is thinking about is to do with totting up (points on your licence that are 3 years old don't get used when they are looking to see the total of points you have when a ban is looming for having accrued 12 points).0 -
that was quick. thanks folks.
if they dont get taken into account for further offences, after three years, how does that stand for insurance purposes.0 -
Depends on the question the insurance company asks ... it won't be "How many points do you have on your licence ?"
it will be something like "Have you been convicted of any motoring ofence within the last x years ?" or similar.0 -

Just out of interest, would drink driving get you points? Or would it just show that you had a drink driving ban and that would be able to get removed after 11 years.
As far as how long you need to tell the insurer, it'll depend how long they ask you to go back. If they ask if theres been any convictions in the last 3 years you wont (after 3 years have passed) but if they ask in the last 5, you will.0 -

Yes - in cases where for some special reason the court doesn't disqualify, they can give up to 11 points.0 -

A disqualification for a minimum of 12 months is applicable for driving with excess alcohol. This is mandatory, there is no discretion. The period of disqualification increased with the alcohol reading. This law applies to England and Wales. I can't comment about what happens in Scotland as their legal system is different to ours.0

It depends on which motoring offence the 'Points' relate too, so there is no 'same' answer as it were.
