Cheap worktops???

Options
Hi I'm looking for some cheap worktops for a craft room. Just wondered if anyone knows where to get some.

Screwfix do cheap ones but you have to order £500 worth and I don't want that many lol.

  • Any DIY shed. B&Q, Wickes. Might be worth asking a member of staff if they have any offcuts if you only need a small size.

Also check ebay, I had ~1.5m left over from my kitchen install. In the end it sold for £1. Bargains to be had, only check for local listings though. Check other free adverts, gumtree, local paper, adverts in post office/shops etc.

Alternatively how about thick mdf and a tin of paint?

Another idea for you. Buy a few lengths of 4x2 or 6x2 timber (PAR - planed all round) from your local timber merchant and lay them next to each other and screw to a frame beneath. This is what i just did for a workbench in my shed: see http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=34736413&postcount=23 ..i've since nailed some hardboard panels to it to protect the surface and it makes the top even smoother. 4x2 or 6x2 timbers worked out far cheaper than a worktop or other sheet materials and it's much more solid!

We've got two old doors in our shed that make a great workbench - they're fixed to strong trestles.

Ikea do cheap, as do the sheds. I got a cheap top for my office when Ikea sold off their display office desk tops. Got a glass one for £5!

    Thanks everyone, great ideas.

I really want proper worktops. Above is a pic of the craft room, we painted our old kitchen units and fitted them in there. Hubby wants to put the worktops from the door right up to the end of the other wall (right angle). I also want a table high length by the window(opposite the wall with the most cabinets). It's the delivery charge that gets me. lol

We live very near to an Ikea distribution centre but miles away from a store.

Try freecycle - you would be surprised what comes up. Or see if you can find someone with a Howdens account. They do a 28mm thick budget range which might be ideal.
