Is it worth increasing the RAM on my PC?

Options
Hi I have a fairly old desk top computer which has 512 mb RAM. I have been given another computer and have discovered that it also has 512 mb RAM and the 'bits' are identical to mine. Is it worth using the RAM bits from the spare computer and putting them into my one? I have two spare slots... was just wondering if I would notice any improvement or if it would upset the running of my computer.

TIA

Is the RAM exactly the same specification? i.e. PC3200 or PC4300?

If it is compatible with your Motherboard, 2 x 512MB will enable a marked improvement to performance.

To quote, "Why don't you try it?"

If the PC boots and runs successfully, then, assuming you have XP, you might see some improvement because of less paging - but I wouldn't go as far as saying you would get a "marked improvement".

If your PC doesn't boot, just remove the added 512 MB memory stick!

I would have done it without a second thought, just be careful in there. Really , really make doubly sure they are identical, very small differences in gold edgeconnector pin count

There will be a marked improvement in performance. Less paging, the ability to multi-task as well as the ability to use more memory intensive programs is equal to a marked improvement.
    Don't be pedantic.

Ahhh , when I said identical... i meant the same shape!! there are lots of numbers printed on the outside should the numbers be the same too? I haven't checked these. I just worked on the theory that ... if it fits, do it! (but I haven't tried yet)

    TIA

Ok I have just had a look at the numbers and my Pc RAM has the code PC3200u and the spare has PC2100u.

    I guess they are different.

Might it be worth buying some more RAM? How much would you suggest?

    TIA

Running CPU-Z will give you information about your Mainboard which can use to find the out about it's capability and compatibilities.

As to whether it is worth it to you to upgrade RAM... that would depend on your how you use the computer and it's specification. Being 2 x 256MB isn't the most convenient configuration. Is it a branded machine?
