Sorry i just wanted to come on here for rant. I've been very careful about money since i saw this website but last week my fiancee left me and moved out and now i can't sleep for money worries. I have no idea how one income will pay for this house with our mammoth mortgage and to top it all off i got in and had a letter from EDf energy telling me they want to put the price of my DD up by £30 a month!

I'm going to look on this website for cheaper offers but its such a pain.

My credit card bill is on the side unopened as right now i don't think i can face it.

Anyone care to send me a virtual hug?

Sending you a hug, phone EDF and tell them you are now on your own and the bill should fall dramatically - by switching everything off before you go to bed. Now you are here you can change your life one penny at a time! It may seem like the end of the world today but you need to empower yourself by sitting down - when you feel up to it - and work things out. In the mean time feel free to come on here and rant away to us.

    Here's another hug

Have you thought about posting a statement of affairs on the debt free wannabe board? They are very good at making suggestions to cut costs, some obvious but some quite innovative.

    Good luck
  • Hi Schumie,

Massive hugs being sent from this direction!

Now, take a deep breath. Get yourself calm and clear-headed and when you are ready sit yourself down and work out what you need to do. I'm sure there'll be plenty of people waiting to help!

    Hug hug hug

Is the house in your name only?
If not then be aware that it doesn't matter for how long you are the only one paying the mortgage etc, his name on deeds = 50% ownership.
Good news is, anything in both names he is as liable as you, where ever he is living.
Don't forget to apply for single person Council Tax allowance.
A water meter will save you money on your water rates - I now live alone and water meter charges are about a quarter of what the rates were.

    Ahh big hug.

same thing happened to us recently scottiosh power they upped our monthly from 90-140 a month despite knowing we wont use as much in summer months.

Looked at sainsburys energy today gioves me 25quid free nectar points, double points on shopping for 6months plus nectar points on energy bills, could save us 220 so need to get hubby to change a hassle but worth it.

Thanks everyone you've all been lovely. Funnily enough i signed up for a water meter today and filled out the form for single person occupancy with the council tax today. It just all gets on top of me sometimes. x

So very sorry to read that you find yourself in this predicament. I have been in dire financial circumstances and they are still considerably dire. It is possible to reduce outgoing expenditure but it does often mean getting used to a going without some things that we have become accustomed to doing, having, going etc. I would strongly suggest you visit the Debt Free Wannabe Forum which is here on MSE. I'm sure they will be able to offer you financial guidance but for Old Style ways of reducing your outgoings then i'm certain that you will find it beneficial to read threads here on the OS forum.

I have been up to my neck in debt and the ONLY way I managed to start getting myself out of the mess was to be really brave and sit down and work out exactly what i owed. I was on my own with two kids to raise and an ex husband who had conveniently put all the bills in my name before the marriage broke down beyond repair...so i left with the kids and had to pay his bills as well as my own bills in a new place...at least until i managed to sort that part of things out. I never got that money back though which meant that 10 years ago I started this new life in debt. I suddenly became seriously ill and was unable to work and because of the nature of my illness (es) more and more debt accumulated over the years.

It got to a stage where I dared not look at the bills as they came in. Then one day I decided that i had to look at what my options were, was there another way to deal with my debt. I was fortunate in that despite not working full time i was able to secure a loan. I used the loan to pay off all my store and credit cards. I have now paid off the loan but i still have an overdraft left to pay off. I am sharing this experience to let you know that no matter how dire things are, you can find a way through this. I would striongly advise you to contact EDF and inform them of the situation that you now find yourself. It may be possible for them to reduce your payments and spread them out or alternatively to fit your house with a meter spo that you only pay for what you use. Whatever you do, do something, because debt just gets more and more difficult to deal with the longer that we try to ignore it. Yes it is painful and even sickening to see the reality in black and white, what we owe...but don't deny it's happening because if you do, then your interest rates etc will contiue to grow and the amount may eventually become insurmountable. (((big hugs)))
