I have one outside in a small pot. Bought on impulse from farm shop (very cheap to be fair). Haven't really looked after it much as didn't think it would do much, looked today and I have a small fruit growing.. Just carefully transplanted to a larger pot, hoping I get at least one aubergine now - good times!0

this is my first year and put 2 in pots and 1 in garden patch.. not really done anything yet.. will plant them in greenhouse ALOT earlier next yearGod helps make my veggie patch grow. He provides everything I need.. It only fails if I do NOT do as He has told me!!
Imagine if Christianity spread like swine flu... how much better the world would be!! God Bless!0 -
What size pot should you grow aubergines in? Mine is in a 20cm - is that too small? (I assume you measure the top of the pot and not the bottom, is that right?)0

If can anyone help, I just want to know if this is an aubergine plant. I know it sounds daft but I bought it at a charity shop when it was a seedling (less than 2 inches high with only 2 leaves) and I felt sorry for it.

Hi, yes it looks like an aubergine to me - you'll know better when the flowers come out purple (I can see some very aubergine-like buds coming) Nice job you've done, it looks very healthy!0 -
Thanks izzwizz, first time growing one and I don't even like aubergines (I'm growing it for mum - thing is mum is greek so uses it her cooking but has never seen an actual aubergine plant).
I think I worried to much to soon as the leaves are forming shape like the ones I saw on google images.
Just realised it really has shot up since I bought it as that was only 20days ago. I have transferred it from a 9cm pot to a 5in pot then to 12in pot. Should I move to a bigger pot?
Also I water it every evening 1 - 2 litres and every 4 days gets feed. Which feed is correct tomato food or multi purpose vegetable food?0 -
I'm completely new to gardening - I am growing two aubergine plants along with a tomato plant, a chilli plant and two pepper plants. All have flowered apart from the tomato and the chilli plant is setting fruit with about 10 chillis growing on it. They are all in our conservatory.
The aubergine plants have about 5-8 flowers on them each with loads of buds for new flowers. I was wondering if they need a high temperature to set fruit. Its not been very warm here the last few weeks. Also do aubergine plants like or dislike humidity?
Thanks!0 -
yes, I've started to mist the plants to prevent whitefly/red spider mite and have more humidity for them (that's prob why they suffered last yr, when no regular misting was done and so it encouraged whitefly to come in). i've put two potted ones back in the greenhouse now as i've read they much much being indoors (they like it with more protection) so then it'll fruit better too.
also read that you need to nip off the growing shoot after it's reached 12" tall (says RHS) and when you've got 5 fruits setting.:beer:0
