Shorthold Tenancy - Notice Period

Once the initial period (i.e. 6/12 months) is finished, and it goes onto a month by month rolling contract where the tenants have to give 1 months notice to move out, does this notice have to coincide with the rent period (i.e. the rent is payable monthly on the 15th, so would you have to give 1 months notice on/before 15th and then move out the 15th of the next month) or is it just 1 month from when you give notice (i.e. give notice on the 8th, move out the 8th of next month and only pay a portion of the last months rent for the time you're actually there).
Is there a definitive answer for this, or would it depend on the T&Cs of the actual contract signed?
Thanks.

The Shelter website gives a succinct explanation of how to end a periodic tenancy, including examples. It is important to time the expiry of the notice with the rental period. It's not simply a case of giving a months notice at any point during the calendar month of one month in duration.0

Ian85, the "rental period" is determined in length by the frequency of rent payment, so if paying monthly under the original Fixed Term (FT) the rental period is clearly one month. The Stat Periodic agreement runs from the day after the expiry of the FT which may coincide with the rent due date, or it may be different. So, if the Fixed term expires on the 10th of the month, each subsequent monthly rental period runs from the 11th to the 10th. If the T gave notice on the 12 or 13 of July, they would be bound to pay rent until 10th Sept unless the LL agreed otherwise ( some will, if they can easily find a new T or if they have had a good relationship with a reliable T)0
