Although you've had to fork out for sky, you need only pay for the equipment and installation. you don't need any packages to receive the usual channels you were used to before the switchover. Not teaching you to suck eggs, just sounds like maybe you've been sold something you don't need. You could also just have bought a set top box from any supermarket for about £20 that'll get you "freeview" channels, you still need to pay the bbc tax though.
Perhaps the other poster is unable to receive DTT in which case a set top box would be of no use.0 -
But you do not have to pay Sky and if you are buying equipment that goes wrong 3 times a year I would suggest you are making an unwise purchase.
OK i give in, so how do you get sky without paying sky, other than by paying someone else for sky channels?? and the three times a year thing was just an example, although sky equipment doesn't have a great track record. And there aren't many other options on what equipment you buy in that respect.0 -
So now you're saying if you happen to be in an area where it isn't possible to receive the bbc channels normally, you should pay out for sky just to justify the fact that you have to pay for the other guff you can't get anyway?! Nice one, do you work for the bbc by any chance?
You seem to be obsessed with paying Sky for something that you do not need to?

If you wish to receive Sky channels then you pay Sky - if you don't want Sky channels but wish to receive satellite TV then you can try Freesat (for example)0 -

Ahh, freesat. for a one off installation fee from £80 if you don't already have a dish, just the cost of the box if you do, Or a nice new telly with it built in? That freesat? Another option yes, yet you still cough up, and still have to pay the bbc tax.0 -

Do you expect to get all your equipment for free for everything?
Not sure what point you are trying to make.
Earlier you were stating, in more than one post, that you had to pay Sky - I pointed out that you did not.
And if you install the dish and cable yourself you will have saved some money on the installation cost too.;)0 -
I think maybe the first quote is referring to having a pc and a tv card, in which case yes you do still need a license. Any time you purchase tv receiving equipment, you will be asked for your postcode, which is then checked against the tv license database, and if your'e not on there for whatever reason (like the license is in your wife's name for example!) you will receive a letter from the ss demanding an explanation, or your contribution.
this i know due to it happening when i bought a dongle for my recent holiday to afghanistan.fredbear5150 wrote: »However, I would like to see it scrapped as a license fee and just added to normal taxes since I doubt there are very few people now who do not have to buy it - even if you have an Internet PC & no TV, I believe you still have to buy it. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)I do hope you're joking or that I've misread your post!
As technology has advanced there are increasing numbers of people who don't watch broadcast television, but use their tellys for purposes undreamt of when the licence fee was first introduced.
The part I was objecting to though was the idea that everyone should pay through taxes, as quite a few people now only use their tellys for DVDs, gaming & viewing photographs & have no need of a licence.
But picking up on the part you mention, actually you don't need a licence if your pc has a tv card, nor do you need one to actually own any kind of equipment capable of receiving broadcasts.
As you say you do have to register any equipment you buy, but it's what you do with that equipment that determines whether or not you need a licence.
Provided you're not watching or recording programmes as they're being broadcast, you don't need one TVLA site.0
