Cheap Wood for Bench

Options
Hello,

I'm trying to get a hold of some wood for a bench I have had kicking about the garden since we moved in the house. The old wood on it was pretty worn away and missing panels but the two sides were wonderfully solid metal that we have salvaged. The only issue is getting wood for these now as I have been told I will need a hard wood and the local timber yard quoted me £40 for the wood!! I'm pretty sure I can pick up a whole new bench for this price, does anyone know how I can do this cheaply in the Edinburgh area?

You need a hardwood for outside use and probably a fairly expensive wood to give a finish which will not splinter and snag clothes. You could do it with a soft wood but it is unlikely to last. If the iron work is nice, don't cheapskate it, but perhaps someone will name a cheap and durable wood for this

Cheers mate, the iron work is a bit worn so might just see if I can use softwood to make a bench in my shed out of it then

I was quoted £60-£80 by a couple of timber yards for hardwood for exactly the same job ... £40 is a bargain !
