David Lloyd - Couples membership.

Hi,
Hope you can help (I've searched through the many DL threads but can't find the answer to my question!).
I have a couples membership, and I want to cancel - finding it hard to get there with the hours I work. My partner however, wants to stay on, and uses the gym 5 days a week without fail.
I am hunting for my contract this evening, however I am of course aware of the 3 months cancellation period.
However, how I see it is that I am NOT cancelling a membership, just part of it.
Does anyone think I have an argument here? Tied with the fact that they can see my partner is a regular user, and may also decided to quit if they stick to their guns?
I think it's daylight robbery, and they are of course going to charge my partner more money when I leave!
Would be interesting to hear peoples thoughts.
Thanks,

No, I don't think you have any argument here.
Although it is just you that wants to cancel, you are cancelling the 'couples membership' as that membership package is for 2 people, and at a special offer that presumably is cheaper than two seperate memberships. You no longer need it for 2 people, so you do have to cancel the whole membership. You can't cancel one part of a special offer, it's kind of like saying "oh that's buy one get one half price, I only want one so I'll take the half price one", it just can't be done in real life.
It's unfortunate your partner will have to pay more money to stay a member, but that's the price he would have paid if you hadn't joined in the first place isn't it? They most probably won't mind if he quits if they charge him full price, it won't make any diference to them. Everyone else has to pay it even if they also use the gym 5 times a week.0 -
I'm not sure if that is the case though, our membership covers us both, and whilst I understand I am cancelling my part, we're not effectively ending the membership.
I guess it's all down to how the contract is worded and whether they cover themselves, which I am sure they do and I'll just have to swallow the next 3 months payments. Just thought it's worth looking into as £180 saved would be extremely handy.
What I mean about him being a member that uses the gym regularly, by the way is that surely they would rather keep him as a long-term member paying £71 a month, than argue with him over my money and lose him as a customer. When I say he goes 5 times a week, I mean it in terms of they can check this and see he is a gym-bunny and will stay there for the foreseeable future.
Thanks for your help.0 -
Was there a minimum contract term (eg 12 months) when you joined, and are you in or out of this minimum term?.....0

I dont presume theres anyone else who could go with your husband?
Often they will say couples membership which gives the impression boyfriend and girlfriend or husband and wife. But most gyms allow the 2nd person to be a friend or work colleague. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
You have a couples membership. If you cancel one half of that it is no longer a couples membership. It is a single membership. Therefore you are bringing the couples membership to an end.I'm not sure if that is the case though, our membership covers us both, and whilst I understand I am cancelling my part, we're not effectively ending the membership.
You can play with the semantics all you want, but unfortunately the extreme likelihood is that you have no leg to stand on."MIND IF I USE YOUR PHONE? IF WORD GETS OUT THATI'M MISSING FIVE HUNDRED GIRLS WILL KILL THEMSELVES."0 -
Thanks everyone, I thought this would be the case, but as I don't need to alert them to me cancelling until the end of the month, I have a bit of time to look into it.
We're out of the original 12 month period - but with David Lloyd even if you want to cancel after this you have to give 3 months notice (disgusting really but I did know this and should have cancelled much before now!).
He's going to ask some friends that are looking at joining gyms, but I think the outcome will be I have to just swallow the 3 months.
