pain relief/management during childbirth?

If CS are that bad how come celebs like Madonna and Demi Moore paid to have one instead of a vaginal birth?

Gas and air - definitely recommended
Had an epidural - it took 3 goes with the needle to get it working and staying still while having contractions is very difficult! BUT it was heaven when it worked.
If there's a next time I'll make sure that I have access to everything but try to use the minimum.
