annual gas consumption 55000kWh
We were with Eon but they kept getting our bills wrong (which they kept admitting and amended) but then we moved to Scottish Power who promised to be cheaper. When we switched over, they couldnt agree on our start/end meter numbers but didn't bother telling us this for 6months so we couldn't just read it for them. So it has now resulted in us having a £900 debt with Eon which we are having to pay off. We were only with Eon for about a year and paid them £65 a month.
Now Scottish Power are saying we are behind with their bills. We were paying them £95 a month but this has been upped to £135.
We live in a 3 bed semi, with two adults and a toddler. My partner works from home and me and my son are home alot. So the computers and tv are on alot. Our last quarterly bill for electric was only £166.
Our quarterly gas bill is £475! Our cooker is electric. Even in the winter we only have the heating on for a few hours a day.
Our annual kWh is 55000 and I think the average is 21000.
I know it's rare that meters are wrong. But does this sound right to anyone?

When you moved to Scottish Power, they would have asked you for a reading.
It doesn't sound like you provided this. Without it, it's not surprising the start reading has been in dispute.
In any event, the final reading with E.On should match the start reading with Scottish Power ... and if they do, you'll owe one company so arguing which now probably doesn't matter too much.
Check the supplier is calculating your gas kWh correctly based on the type of meter you have.

Do you have an metric or imperial meter? Does it have ft3 or m3 written on it? On your bills what happens when you divide the kWhs by the number of meter units - you should get approximately 11.2 or 32. If the kWhs is 32 times the meter readings and you have a metric meter you are being overcharged.0

It sounds very much like you have a metric gas meter(measures in cubic metres) yet are being charged for an Imperial meter(measures in cubic feet). Older meters were imperial but they are all being changed for metric. Has yours been changed recently?
1 gas unit with a metric meter is approx 11.2kWh and on an Imperial meter it is approx 31.5kWh
Check your meter - it will have cu ft or f3 on the face.0 -

Of course they asked... And we gave.. but 6 months later coming to us and both companies suddenly saying we owe them the money. We had spent 6 months paying Scottish power for their meter reading for them to decide they were going to work off a new number and we now owe Eon.
But that wasn't really my point... That was just an example of how much they keep messing my bills up to a point where I have no idea what's right or wrong anymore0 -

Is the start meter reading from SP the same as the final one from E.on? If so, it probably isn't worth worrying over too much. If you don't owe the £900 to E.on, you'll end up owing about the same to SP. It sounds like they decided the reading you took and provided probably was erroneous."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Hi Clic - Your annual 'billed' consumption of 55,000 Kwh is way over the top of the Rule-of-Thumb average of 20,000 Kwh, and the ratio between these two figures is exactly what it would be if you have a Metric meter, but are being billed on the basis of an Imperial meter
Imperial meter 55,000 Kwh equates to appx. 1,746 Meter units
Metric meter 1,746 Meter units equates to appx. 19,555 Kwh
Look at your meter - It will marked on the front as M3 for metric or Ft3 for Imperial
If your meter is marked Ft3, you certainly have a problem with your gas, but it's not the billing
If your meter is marked M3, look at your bill and divide the number of Kwh charged by the number of meter units - the answer should be appx. 11.2 - If the answer is appx. 31.5 you are being wrongly charged on the basis of an Imperial meter. You should inform Scot. Power immediately and confirm this in writing, then also send a copy of this letter to EON as they will also owe you a serious chunk of money0 -
Hi clic
This level of gas consumption over a year for the type of property you describe is, quite frankly, phenomenal.
As others have posted, I suspect you are being billed on the wrong type of meter and probably have been for the duration of your account with us. If so, this will need correcting.
I would refer this to our Director's Office (contact details are on your bill) for a full investigation of your old account. Ask for a complaint to be raised. This will automatically suspend any debt follow up whilst the case is looked at.
If we have the wrong dial meter registered against your account, it is more than likely we will need to re-bill the entire account from the very beginning.
As part of this process, we can see about agreeing a reading with your new supplier so we end the account to the same reading they open your new account.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction clic. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

This is about the 3 times the annual consumption of my 4 bedroom house!..I suggest you raise a complaint with your energy supplier to investigate the matter.0
