How to deal with damp?

We have damp areas in different parts of the house. Its a very old barn conversion and is mostly rendered stone. Every room in the house has at least one and in most cases 2 or 3 external walls as the house is in an almost horseshoe type shape. In a couple of rooms there are damp patches on the walls (which are plastered and painted). In the winter when the fire is going the walls can be wet on the inside with condensation. More of a problem is the bedroom which has developed that damp smell over the last 6 months. In the corners of the rooms where things are stored the floor has got damp and the carpet is starting to rot away. In this case the walls show no signs at all of being damp, just the floor which is concrete. How do we tackle this, i really want it sorted by winter this year.

main causes of damp are the roof, water ingress, condensation, and high soil levels outside the walls.
condensation is a huge problem in some houses. wall/roof insulation needs to be looked at, and also ventilation.

Thanks for your reply. It does sound like it's just condensation then. The roof is very well insulated, the walls aren't. What is there that we can do about that bearing in mind they aren't cavity walls? Ventilation may also be an issue we can look at that.0
