Peugeot 206
I am looking to get one of these cars and have up to £1,000.00 to spend. There seem to be a few of these cars around but I'm thinking I should try and get a newer car for my money but then keep telling myself I'm not overly bothered on the age (post x reg if poss though).
Would I be better spending my money on an older car or trying to stretch my money on a newer plate? Also, as I just want a run around, would a bigger engine make the car more expensive?

I own a 206 x reg 2.0 pertol very good speced air con, half leather. the car has been relable if your on a budget avoid something like this tax is expensive, so is insurence and only get about 28mpg. i payed 1200 year and half ago. As mentioned the diesel wouid be more econmical they aint bad cars but you can get some bad ones and there french. if you buy newer dont think it would be as high up in range but may have less miles.0

Just bought the wife a Citroen Xsara HDi on an 02 plate for £1000. It came as a p/x from her brothers garage where he works, and although it's got the same engine as mine, (99 406 HDI.) her tax is lower.
So now we both have French diesels, and non of the electrical problems that people harp on about. (I've had mine 5 years.)
Mine does 45mpg around town, and 50mpg on a stretch but it's too early yet to measure hers.
Diesel is your friend and the way to go for you. That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -

Yep I agree, the last great Peugeots were the 306 GTI6/Rallye and the 106 GTI and even they suffered with serious electrical failures.
I had a 306 up until 2008.
A friend had a yellow 306 cabriolet, it was practically like new.... One day it just stopped working, major electrical failure and a mint motor reduced to scrap.
They have probably improved greatly in the last 5 years (at least in quality terms), but I still wouldn't by one again.
Peugeot and Citroen are one and the same.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Avoid French cars, especially at this price range, buy a Japanese branded car, it will serve you better.0

Thanks to everyone that has replied. I have just quoted some of the messages so I can answer everything that everyone has kind of said the same thing about.
I was looking to get a maximum 1.4 engine. I was always under the impression that diesels were better economically if you drove longer distances. I live 1 mile from work (but try to walk if I can) and my family live 30 miles away and I probably drive to see them about half a dozen times a year, more if I can.
Not looking for anything high spec, like I said I just want a runaround, something to get me from a to b, and the reason I chose the 206 was because I like the new shape (I know, very girlie).
Other cars I had thought of looking at were Ford, maybe a Focus or something, VW Golf, although I know they are very good at holding their prices, obviously the Peugeot and Skoda, as apparently they are supposed to have a good reputation now, unlike what they used to have.
Which cars are made by the Japanese?Did owe £9,951.96

Before i had my 206 i had 1.5 diesel use to get about 60mpg with it so driving the 60 mile round trip would be fairly cheap. Golfs are very nice but as you have said very expensive. As for japanese cars that is Nissan, Honda, Toyota.0
