Dont you have a consumer unit like this

    p4761593_l.jpg

Its then labelled like shower, lights downstairs, sockets down, upstairs lights etc, RCD

I hope you don't have one like that one above as Wylex were subject to a product recall last year

On a more serious note you shuold really have the light fitting replaced. The water in the fitting (when power is on) lowers the insulation resistance and goes burnt and black

It really needs checked out as soon as possible

You should use a competent person for the work, links below

baldelectrician I dont know I just posted that picture to show Op what a consumer unit looked like

    /goes off to check

    I got a 'legrand'

The problem I find with tradesmen is they dont want little jobs, even a full days job ie I am having intregal garage rewired due to dodgy wiring from previous owner, new sockets and extra ones, 2 security lights, small consumer unit in garage I had problems getting a tradesman, and this isnt first time I have had people either bump up price as they dont want work, dont return your calls or dont bother to come
  • I prefer the small jobs- gets you known to the customer and usually leads to larger jobs / word of mouth

Well I am glad you do but some others dont

You try and do right thing even when money is very tight, I am currently having two lots of work done to house electrical and building and got a large quote for a days work on replacing ridge tiles (labour only) for £500 I still have to supply at my costs the ridge tiles and sand/cement. I suspect he (1 man band) doesn't want work because £500 for a days work is a lot

I have upteen problems with tradesmens in past failing to come or making excuses, I pay in cash when do get work eventually done straight away and provide tea/coffee/biscuits even radio to make them happy
