something needed to stop window opening!

DH & I will have our 5yo niece staying overnight with us in a couple of weeks.
I've just realised that our home is terribly child-unfriendly & the thing that's currently scaring me the most is that the windows in the bedrooms open out fully. We have UPVC windows, with one solid, unopening side, and one opening side - is there anything we can get to keep the window open slightly, but securely, for her ?
Sorry for the daft question, I'm just a bit worried about our lively & enquiring little niece going head first out of our second floor window !

Can you just leave the window shut?
Is your neice tall enough to reach the handle to open it? My 6yr old cannot reach the handle of our UPVC windows but then they are about halfway up the window, If yours are at the bottom I can see that would be more of a problem.
Are they very easy to open? Ours have a button you have to push at the same time as turning the lever, my daughter cannot open them on her own.MFW Start Sep 07 £79484, Now £587740 -
we had a glazier come round and change the hinges so they would only open about 1 inch unless you clicked them underneath and then they would open fully. can't rememeber of cost as we had all the kids windows done plus had lots of other work done. but it wasn't alot. i am thinking it was around £10 ish per window. but for piece of mind and safety it is worth every penny imo.0

thanks to you both for the quick replies !
I guess I could keep the window shut, but I'm not absolutely sure she couldn't manage to get over to the window from the bed - it's quite a small room. When she visited last she was almost managing to lean over from the bed to the sill, and I think she could've managed it if I hadn't been there to stop her. The handle does have a push button though, so I think you maybe right in that it would be very difficult for her to get all the actions in the right order for her to open the window
Jcr16 - thanks so much for the idea of a glazier - just had not thouht of that at all ! I've been looking in mothercare, homebase and the like, but never thought of calling the window people themselves!
I think I'm just going into concerned aunty overdrive: first o/night visit & whilst I feel very honoured, I'm also incredibly concerned !

Have you got any bubble wrap? What I'd do for now is completely cover the window in bubble wrap with loads of tape, so she can't see the catches?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

they do have a "slightly open but still locked" setting - only open by about an inch though, so that may work too!"Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it" Einstein 19510 -

I thought for a minute that you were going to suggest bubbling wrapping our niece for safety !!
I don't know how you mums do it - we've only got her for one night & I'm a bag of nerves already!"Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it" Einstein 19510 -
You can buy little plasticcatches that you attach to the windows which prevent them from being opened more than an inch or two. I have never personally used them as the windows i have already have an in built safetycatch (these in the link look very similar to the ones on our windows) that does the same thing. The two links will show you what i mean. the plastic ones should be fine for the odd night but if you plan on having the littleone stay on a regular basis it may be worth investing in the metal ones:jFriends are like fabric you can never have enough:j0

Leave it closed or are you wanting to get air circulation at night0

the ro1 resistor is very similar to what we had fitted. it works a treat.
i thought it was part of the hinge but guess not. we had the hinges changed ( so i though they were part of the hinge but seeing that link they prob not) at same time so the window opens wide like a door . so if there is a fire it can open wide and be used as a fire escape. because lets face it double glazing is strong and if there is a fire it not like i'm gonna have a hammer handy to smash the glass.0
