HELP! Tree seedlings in lawn.
Hi everyone
I've never posted in this forum before so hope I have the right place for this. I'm looking for some help with my garden. Last year I cut down a tree in my garden. I don't know for definite but I believe it was a green ash tree. Anyway the stump is just about dead but before or whilst it was being cut down, it has managed to drop seedlings all over my garden including in the lawn. Some of them are very deep rooted and difficult to pull out by the root and besides there are way too many of them to do individually. I just wondered if anyone could help me by suggesting a product or method to get rid of them without having to re-turf my whole lawn. I'm a total novice in the garden so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Jo

I don't understand , how did the seeds get a hold in the lawn ? They would surely be cut by the mower when you cut the grass..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I wish I knew too but the only thing I can say is that they grow so quickly that it was literally a couple of days before they started shooting. The mower will cut them but they are still rooted so will just keep on growing and obviously grow quicker than the grass so stick up making it look like a jungle even when the grass is only a couple of inches long!

I think Ash trees put out suckers and they shoot up all over the place. Chances are they are from the roots of the Ash that is still trying to grow, at least that is what happens in my garden! :"Live each day as if it were your last and garden as though you will live forever"

:eek::eek::eek: OMG! Well, if that's the case then I'm going to have to get it all dug up. Don't think I can leave it like this because it looks a mess. Do your ash trees get big purple bud type things on the end? (I'm still trying to positively I.D this damn tree!).0

You said that the stump is dying, it is worth killing off the stump with some stump killer? It might then stop the suckers coming up as the main tree will be dead and hopefully save you from having to dig the whole thing up!
You can buy stump killing crystals at garden centres and diy shops. Drill some holes, put in the stump killer and then cover with a plastic bag or something.
Yep, sounds like an ash!
Good Luck!

By your description, I'm gussing they're sumac trees. They are a !!!!!! to get rid of and I feel your pain as I'm having a similar problem after hubby pulled up/cut down the main tree. There are now hundreds coming up all over! Advice seems to be poison the parent tree stump if possible as this will hopefully kill off the babies. Good luck!0

I doubt if it is an ash, since seedlings of that would have been visible ages ago and could then have been pulled-up easily.
As an experiment, I once counted the number of ash seedlings I removed from just a square metre of my Dad's garden during one spring, and it was 54!:( Ash isn't therefore recommended by me as a garden tree!
So, it does sound like Rhus typhina suckers, in which case poisoning the stump with Dax Root Out (hard to get now, Google it) might work. I only say 'might' because the suckers are notoriously hard to destroy.0
