Hi all, i'm desperate to work from home: I've been signed off with a long term illness (Fibromyalgia) which is still currently being looked into. I had been building up a long term career with a certain famous Building society as a project manager and was moving up the ladder slowly but surely. However when this illness flaired up i was signed off and after 12 months was struck off with my contract of employment terminated. I felt this was fate as i wasn't exactly enjoying the job anyway. So far, i have had many tests and will be off for some considerable time yet. I have been told to avoid going back to normal office work or anything too physical and it has been recommended that i find work from home which i would be thrilled to do. i have the facilities and room to do so but i can't for the life of me find anything genuine to do from home!!! all the ads for work from home jobs so far seem to be scams or require financial outlay which i cannot afford!! can anyone point me in the direction of something genuine! Or even suggest ways i can get help to start my own business from home as i have lots of ideas but not the capital to start it!! frustrated isn't the word!!!! please help!! thank you!!!!

Hi, sorry about the diagnosis there is a few of us on here with Fibromyalgia so you are in no way alone...There is also some good Fibrormyalgia forums if you google them...
I can offer no real advice on the business side of things but I wanted to stress don't rush into anything..Starting a business is very very hard, my hubby did it and he is well but obviously the struggle we have had it has been very difficult and trying to manage my Fibromylagia at the same time....
Rest is vitally important and you must not over do things as it will make things ten times worst..For me personally i have good spells and then i can relapse for a couple of years but it never goes away. It depends how bad you are, but personally please think over self employment very carefully as I know from personal experience it is very hard managing a new business and a difficult illness such as this. If you are signed off sick as hard as it is just take the time to step back a bit, get to know the illness and what you can and can't do and then consider different avenues of employment..
If you need any advice don't hesitate to ask...0 -
Thats very sweet of you thanks...I appreciate the advice...funnily enough you're not the first to warn me about taking it easy...i do tend to try and push things and am struggling...i think it's stupid male pride!! i'd just be happy enough to do some data entry work or something from home but it's so hard finding something genuine, worthwhile and also flexible. !!!:footie:ROBF08AFC:footie:0

What were the ideas that you had that required capital? There are ways of getting business loans if the ideas are viable.0

You should have a word with your local Job Centre asking them what help there is for people who are unable to work outside the house. They do have business advisers0

Well my partner wants to start up a Hollistic therapy business which is definitely going ahead over the next couple of years. My ideas vary but include moving into the retail sale of Hollistic therapy based products such as Aromatherapy oils (homemade) - Crystals - crystal display units - Reiki and Hollistic paintings (which i paint myself) and many other relevant products. Ideally we'd have a store with a treatment room attached - i would run the store and my partner would perform her treatments. it's just getting the capital to set up the business in the first place. With no assets, poor credit history and debts, how do we get there?!!!:footie:ROBF08AFC:footie:0

I guess it depends on the transferable skills, or what you could retrain to do. Things like typing up documents, dissertations etc can be done from home. If you are a numbers person book keeping is maybe an option, as people who run small businesses often don't have time to keep them up to date. You can obviously just test the water by advertising locally to start with to see if there is a need in your area.0

i've got first two books, only half way through first one and am making notes as i read a chapter at a time, just little things to remember, what might help me etc ... certainly making a little more sense slowly
also, got roped into doing tai chi at local place, a way of stretching and using muscles slowly and gently, especially those that havent been used for a while (through pain) - be prepared to have a tired day after though
ps - just to add .. you cant go off on the sick when you're running your own business so make sure you have a backup plan (and money!) as this can and will happen to you0 -
Hi
I cant be much help from the working from home question, but I will be watching this thread with great interest. I too have Fibromyalgia, still under consultant who is possibly looking into it as a secondary cause to Lupus as I have a positive ANA test result.
I feel your pain and frustration, I was working, juggling kids and home before my symptoms started 2 years ago. I now struggle daily, to do my own chores, I have bad and better days, but a day doesn't go by really when I am in pain of some sort.
ATM I am not working as the job I had was too physical, I have been looking for ages for something suitable, I don't claim any benefits so its just one average wage coming into the house hold and I really do need to earn some money. I think I could only manage PT work and there isn't a lot of that around. I have been thinking of business ideas, but you need money for most things and I really don't have anything spare.
Anyway, not sure why I just posted all that, just wanted you to know, your not alone. I really wish you well with everything, Fibro is a horrid illness and very hard for others to understand, I wish sometimes people could walk in my shoes for a day to feel what I feel. On the plus side, it could be a lot worse, so I guess we have to dust ourselves down, and try our best to adapt our lives around this illness. Not as easy as it sounds though, especially when we are having a bad day. Frustration is probably the thing that gets me down most, not being able to contribute to the household income and feeling I have let my family down.

Just a quickie....whilst you are pondering on what/where/when etc get your artwork noticed! Have you tried Folksy or Etsy? They are selling platforms with great communities and forums for starting selling. Just a thought??Christmas crackers bronze £11.66/£5100
