Typical!!
I give my daughter my old work laptop, an IBM T21 and within a month it stops working.
From her description it sounds like the motherboard. It powered on, but stopped during POST test??
Does anyone know of a good value suppiler of a motherboard or another T21 laptop I can use for parts? I am looking at Ebay at the moment.
Failing that I can afford £350 perhaps for a another second user/refurbished laptop, again ideas in this area would be great.
Many thanks for your help and ideas

If I remember correctly with the T21, you could in theory buy another identical-ish specced one (ebay perhaps?) take out your existing hard drive, and swap it to the replacement unit. You could then go one stage further and get a hard drive caddy, and insert that into the laptop (cd drive bay) for extra storage. Depends what your looking to use it for. Then sell the damaged unit back on ebay...there are always takers....
Never been a fan of IBM units generally. I assume you have already checked out the appropriate support pages of the IBM site and perhaps queried your wokplace if someone there could have a quick look at it perhaps??
Alternatively...item code 993081 is a really good bundle at the moment available only on the comet web site. It is a little more though, but the value is good.
Hope that helps....Beware Lego Men with Deep pockets...! :cool:0 -
Is there any message when it stops during POST?Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

maybe try to flash the BIOS. i think if the m/board is fried, you wont get the POST. good way to tell if the m/board is fried is to smell it (seriously) for any burned smell.0

Did she drop it or know it?
Memory could have become unseated.
I assume it is not just a battery problem?
The sound a PC makes on boot is linked to post so even if the screen is not working the beeps can tell you what is wrong.
I'd look at the machine and check the it is not just a fuse in the plug, the power adapter etc...
If it is only a month old you may be able to take it back from where you bought it. Also check the battery as these can go especially on older machines.Seth.0 -
As Seth said, the first thing to check is the memory. Unclip it and clip it back in, or into a second slot if there is one free. I would strongly suspect that this will cure your problem, its a common solution. Ensure that you ground yourself first to remove any static charge in your body otherwise you could do more harm than good. Touching a cold water tap or metal sink should dissipate any static. He huihuinga taangata he pukenga whakaaro – A meeting of people; a wellspring of ideas (Maori proverb)0

Thanks for your helpful ideas.
Unfortunatly I dont get my hands on the laptop until next weekend, but I will mention reseating the memory to her and see if she can ask her step dad to try it.
To clarify, the laptop is my old work laptop, it's around 2 years old.
