Ping times & Upload speeds
What sort of ping speeds and upload speeds are people generally getting on their mobile phones?
I've just moved from orange (orange contract) to three (aaisp monthly payg) and I seem to generally get much better ping times on the three network pretty much irrespective of the number of bars showing. Also orange only ever gave me about 60kbs upload speeds compared with three which generally gives me about 250kbs upload speed.
Download speed wise they both seem to give about 2000kbs most of the time, but having said that I often would only get download speed of about 60kbs on orange!
Ping wise I'm generally looking at 150ms on three vs often up to 13,000ms on orange, but normally at least 500ms!
I have tested both networks in a variety of locations, home, work, town, country etc and orange does not seem good, but I'm not sure how the others such as o2 and voda compare.
I'm wondering if orange overload their data network by cramming on more customers than they have true capacity for.

test done using speedtest app by Ookla (speedtest.net). i think the other speedtest app on the market by extremelabs called xtremespeedtest gives slower test speeds and bigger latency for my location. i havent tried the other newer speeedtest app i saw on the market now.
Signal strength was -85dbm and about 13asu.
three network.
did the test now.
hsdpa connection
2956 kbps download speed
1232 kbps upload speed
ping 129msesconds
server for test - kingston upon hull
date july 18th 2010 time 1844.
i used to get better download speeds of about 5400 kbps in may and june  before the software update from htc
i used to get lower upload speeds of 540 kbps before software update but speeds tripled upwards for uploads after the software update for me.
obviously speeds will depend on location, network and latency and server and 3g/2g/edge/gprs etc and ofcourse network throttling of the data!
everyone responding with test results please mention network / speedtest app used / hsdpa or 2g or 3g etcbubblesmoney :hello:0 -
I found o2's pings got very high, around 700ms when I left them. I was in London though.
T-Mobile have been a lot better with consistent pings of around 130ms. Transfer speeds do vary depending on time of day, I would say around 1Mbps is pretty typical for me, both on the download and surprisingly, the upload.0 -
Those results on Three are quite impressive. I did try a spare 3 sim for a bit and found they could be variable from very quick (Euston station seems very good on 3, but can get pretty slow on T-Mobile, at around 180Kbps) but in some places I gave up trying to load pages.0

Vodafone on Htc Desire
HSDPA (4 bars)
Speedtest.net using maidenhead server
Ping - 103ms
Download - 4256 kbps
Upload - 1235 kbps
Not too shabby
I have shown about 1000kbps higher for up and download at the same time on my history but same ping.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
Three using my dongle thing:
Ping 212ms
Download: 1.72mb/s
Upload: 1mb/s
Not too shabby I think. (Southampton)** Total debt: £6950.82 ± May NSDs 1/10 **** Fat Bum Shrinking: -7/56lbs **
**SPC 2012 #1498 -£152 and 1499 ***
