You'll have problems with the Diesel Particulate Filter on such short trips. Your driving pattern suits a petrol and not a diesel.

the 1.4 petrol engine in a car as big as the civic might well be false economy.might be ok for a jazz, but won't be too efficient in a civic.

The 1.4 petrol DSI will struggle with the weight, the vtec engine is a bit better. Theres only 5 mpg difference between the 1.8 and the 1.4, and the 1.8 will be a lot nicer to drive.

You can also rest safe in the knowledge that your fuel savings will never amount the to money you spent on the car in the first place :)

Fuel saving is not a valid reason for buying a new car... Better to just admit you "want one".

A friend of mine drives an Auris (08 plate). She was going to go for the 1.4 petrol but was advised to go for the 1.6 as it was more fuel efficient for the type of driving she was doing (quite a few motorway miles as well as lots of short runs around town).

I'm surprised they make a 1.4 diesel engine to be honest.

Check out the fuel economy stats for Urban driving. Most car sites only give the Combined MPG.

For the journey you are doing the Urban figures will be more useful.

theres smaller than that out there in diesel form. i think audi did a 3 cylinder 1.2 tdi version of the A2.

and apparently the new vw polo will be available in a 1.2, 3 cylinder tdi version.
