  • In Spain the banks are pretty competitive, why don't you try a Portuguese bank?

In Spain we paid €280 per year for buildings and contents, this on a 3 bed 2 bathroom place. I would always use a company in the country where the property is rather than an English one. Perhaps if there are other British owners in the area you could ask their advice, or perhaps a website for ex-pat owners.
