Come on tomatoes
We are off to the supermarket to do the weekly shop and it is gut wrenching to see tomatoes on the list. We have 21 plants heavily laden with tomatoes but sadly all green. This is our first year growing our own. How long will it be before wecan expect to be eating them?:j

It depends on a whole host of things - variety, age, fruit size, weather, care etc. I would have had about half a dozen or so by now, but they got blossom end rot.
My yellow cherry tomatoes are just showing the first signs of ripening.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
Depends where you live, under glass or outside etc etc
I am in southern Hampshire, one of my neighbours has had a few ripe ones [outside], mine [outdooors] are no where near ready
Normally mid to late August for first ones, then a glut in September & OctoberWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -

A watched tomato never turns!

I've been waiting for ages for mine to go red/yellow, think it's going to be a while yet

I have 3 plants and 2 of them have ripe and ready tomoatoes but the other has massive green toms on, it was the first to fruit but is going to be the last to ripen. Mine are indoors though in a very hot conservatory.
Once I have picked the ripe toms will more continue to grow til the end of the season? Sorry for the stupid question but I'm a total newbie.0 -
Stick some banana skins around the base of the tom plant, works everytime.

Hi Minnie,
There's no such thing as a stupid question....we were all new to gardening once.
You will only get more tomatoes if you have flowers ready to fruit now and even then they will take some time to swell and ripen.

It only works once the tomatoes are ready to be ripened.Stick some banana skins around the base of the tom plant, works everytime.
