    Hi there.

Just wanted to give you some advise really, i have worked in travel for 5 years now and always have people who ask this question and usually you are not entiteled to any compensation unless the delay is over 12 hours and it is usually through the insurance company and not the tour operator. Usually, airlines give £4per person if the delay is over 4 hours but this varies from airline to airline.

Hope this helps - it is never good being delayed.

Ignore this, Cityboy knows what he's talking about! Depending on the precise reason for the delay, it's very possible that you may be entitled to statutory compensation per the EC Regulation he links.

You should also have been provided with food & drink at the time, as well as a statement of your rights under the Regulation.

Might be useful if niknok did some research about the industry (s)he works in, rather than giving the same misleading information on the forum which presumable (s)he gives to his/her own customers. D'oh!

We got delayed by three hours on a Monarch flight recently. They got round offering any compensation by saying that the flight was delayed because the previous job the plane had to do was one of those 'Afraid of flying' courses. It seems that one of the course members was so afraid that they had to abort the take off, which made them miss their next ATC slot. This, apparently, counts as a medical emergency and exempts them having to pay out for meals etc.

It sounded like complete BS to me... but you have to admire their imagination.
  • I was delayed by Monarch for 9.5 hrs to Rome last Thurs and when returning on Sunday evening, yet another delay! We didn't actually leave until Monday evening. Monarch customer service is hopeless. I've followed the information about compensation on this site and have written to Monarch. I know someone who was delayed on a Monarch long-haul flight and they did get the statutory 600 euros compensation. It took about 6 weeks.

The statutory payment currently is paid out for cancellations, not delays

Airlines are currently not paying out compensation for delays. The result of the court case will be due in the Autumn
Whether you will be due compensation at this point will depend on the cause of the delay (not payable if outside the airline's control)

Monarch did have a duty to provide care while you are waiting, food etc. If that did not happen then they should reimburse you for the expenses you had (they may ask for receipts)

But claims will be considered for delays that have occurred up to 6 years ago (small claims court time limit), once the delay compensation challenge has been ruled on in passengers' favour in the Autumn.

If the delay was due to technical issues then in most cases this is covered by compensation. You will almost certainly have to take the airline to court as compensation is not automatically paid.
