Most of what I've read about travelling short on trains refers to getting off the train before your official journey ends. Does anyone know if getting on the train at a later station is permitted?

I've booked a ticket from station A via station B to Station C to come home from holiday, but I'm now thinking I might not actually go as far as station A on my holiday so could join the train (and my reserved seat) at B instead. The distance between A and B is probably about 5 stops, (edit - about 40 minutes) and I would travel all the way to C as originally planned.

The reason's not to get a cheaper fare, I'm just wondering if I actually want to go to town A now.

All travel is in UK.

I have done this before, not sure if it is allowed, but I was not questioned, although if you have a seat reservation, you would probably loose this.

You have not told us what type of ticket it is ie; advance, off peak or peak

Most off peak/peak allow a break of journey on the return so you would be ok, just need to ask at the railway station if there's any restrictions on the return ref 'break of journey'.

Advance tickets don't allow 'break of journeys' and the main problem you will occur is if station B has a ticket barrier as it won't allow you thru and it a good chance that the person manning the barrier won't allow you thru either.

Good point. Yes, it's an advance ticket. TBH with only a 40 minute journey, and not really being bothered where I stay on the last night so long as there's a restaurant and bar, I reckon it'll be just as easy to carry on as planned anyway.
