Weeds in my monoblock driveway

My driveway continually gets clogged up with weeds.

No matter how often I put stuff down or jetwash them away they always come back.

Does anyone know a good, cheap, permanent way to get rid of them?

  • I have block paving, and had a lot of problems with weeds, I tried all sorts of weed killers, even the expensive ones, the best one that I have used is Asda's own make, Sodium chlorate weedkiller for control of weeds on paths and drives,It's in a green upright container, with a picture of block paving on the front. only cost 1.85, did mine over three months ago now and only had the odd weed or two since, used only half of the tub, but made it a little stronger then it said, just watered in on with old watering can, then brushed in to all the nooks and cranny's. worked great ex value the best Ive used, Good luck,

Sorry, no permanent way to keep the weeds away (if you want to keep your block paving!) - keeps gardeners in work!! The gaps between blocks are ideal environments for weeds/plants to grow, especially if the blocks aren't tightly fitted. Weed killer has been mentioned but can be a problem if you have adjacent beds/lawns. Keep gaps in between blocks filled with sand to prevent weed seeds getting deep seated - ants and powerwashers are the main causes of sand being moved!. NB I find a blast from a steam cleaner works well in those tricky areas where you can't use weedkiller!

When I had mine done, they put a membrane down under the "hardcore" which limited the number of weeds.

I was also told about a sealer that you can have put over the paving, but it does affect the colour of the blocks, and makes them more shiny. I can't remember any more than that - sorry!

Yes its a clear resien sealer. good stuff, after you have jetwashed and removed the weeds you can then just brush it on.
  • Pouring boiling water on weeds does the same thing as the sodium chlorate stuff. It is also supposed to last 6 months!

I have started to do this with the excess boiled water in the kettle after making tea etc and it definately kills the weeds!

Salt brushed into the cracks then either spray gently or wait for the rain
    I haven't got one!

Take care in sealing your drive with resin - I know someone who sliped over breaking their hip after having this done! Drive is on a slope - felt like walking in ice!

    What a good idea!

I was about to buy some (more) weedkiller for my paths but think I'll give this a go.

We use a flame weeder - a small one with a gas cannister on it, bought at the local garden centre. You don't burn the weeds off - just pass the flame over the plant. The heat bursts the cell walls and the plant dies over a couple days.
