Help with Changing Supplier
Hi all l have posted somewhere on here about trying to change my supplier but cant find it anywhere:rotfl: Told you l was no techie !!!
I am with EON , am all electric, economy 7 and pay £113 a month DD over 12 months. We get a DD discount of £26-71 - which l assume is not bad.
I would like to see if l can find somewhere else that is cheaper and an added bonus would be cash back. Never changed in 20 years so this is all new to me.
Also looked at the bill as trying to read the meter and see where l can cut down. The tumble dryer will go on twice as very large bedding to dry that needs to go on today and its very rainy and damp.
Looked at the bill and it says day primary units and secondry units and also night units. Can someone explain about the first and second units please ?
The price of the Primary units is 30.89p per unit and the secondry is 12.33p per unit and the night unit is 4.58p per unit.
Finally it seems that people are joining Quidco and topcash back are they to do with this site? Also is there a charge for swtiching from EON?
Hope you can help as planning to do something this week.:A

Hi Moobear - There are tariffs decribed as "Standing charge" (SC) which make a fixed daily service charge of around 20p depending who your supplier is
The alternative which is what you have, is a "No Standing Charge" tariff (NSC), which despite the 'No' in it's title takes a service charge by charging a fixed number of 'Prime' units per Qtr at a higher price than the units you use after the Prime unit threshold.
To get comparative prices from a Switch site, you need to add up how many Day units you have used, and how many Night units you have used over a 365 day year - some Switch sites will ask for your Night rate units to be given as a %age of your total use - so do the sums before going online
The big problem with ECO7 is that whilst the Night power is relatively cheap, you are charged a rate for your daytime power that is a lot more than that charged to customers with a Standard meter - I am on a standard meter with an SC tariff, and my units which are the equivalent of your secondary units cost 7.07pence, compared to your 12.33pence
The more kit you can run, ( Dryer, Wash m/c ?) overnight when the cheap rate is active the better off you will be0 -

I didn't suggest using cashback sites (as opposed to comparison sites that offer cashback) as you were obviously struggling with using the comparison sites and cashback sites will only complicate things further (and there isn't an option of calling someone to get them to do it - cashback sites work online only)"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

Hi Moobear
Cancellation fees depend on the actual tariff you are on. Some have them and some don't. If you let me know your particular tariff, I'll be happy to tell you if there are any fees/penalties for changing supplier.
One thing you should be aware of is we don't give discount on final bills when changing supplier. Therefore, the nearer you time a switch to the previous bill, the less discount you will lose.
As dogshome says, primary units are a set number of kWh's charged at a higher rate each quarter. Most of our tariffs set this threshold at 900 kWh per year (225 kWh per quarter) although there are odd exceptions. Again, if you let me know your tariff, I will advise more accurately.
After the primary units, all other daytime usage is charged at a lower rate. These are the secondary units.
On Economy 7, there is a cheaper rate for all units used at night. I would check you are making the most of this.
The primary/secondary prices on Economy 7 are higher than single rate tariffs. Therefore, you need to be using a fair chunk at night to benefit from this set up. The actual proportion varies depending on the region you are in.
If it turns out you're not using enough night units to benefit from this tariff and are not able to move more of your usage to this time, it is easy to switch to a single rate. No meter change is necessary as we just add the day and night together and charge all at the daytime rates.
Give us a call if you would like to do this. Even if you decide to change supplier, it will probably still benefit you as it takes approx 4-6 weeks to switch. You might as well save a bit whilst you wait to switch
We can also help with your ongoing usage. Have a word with our Energy Efficiency team. They specialise in helping customers reduce their consumption.
Ask for a copy of a booklet called '100 ways to save money by saving energy.' It's free and contains lots of good advice.
Check out our website, too; particularly the interactive house. More good tips here.
You're doing the right thing in checking out the comparison sites to see the best options available to you. I hope this helps with your search.
Give me a shout if you need any more info or drop an email to the address in my Profile. Will be happy to help further.
