Cashline Dispute

A few weeks ago I put in a cashline dispute with my bank, then last week went into the branch to see what was happening with it.

They had no record of my claim and asked me to provide details. Since this had happened weeks ago and I had already reported it the day after it happened I did not have any information about it except what I could vaguely remember.

The staff member made a phone call and, since I knew it was £100 from a garage, checked through every £100 debit within the last 9 weeks. She concluded that none of these transactions came from a garage, which puzzled me. She went on to explain that in some instances like this it is possible that the £100 debit would just be wiped off the transaction record and would not show up. Effectively giving me my money back.

Has anyone heard of this before? Is there no way for me to tell for sure what happened?

If you can no longer see this transaction on your account, then the dispute has been resolved?

    Thanks, but...

They have no record of me making the dispute in the first instance.
How can they claim the dispute has been resolved if they have no record of it?

Without her directly saying so, it was clear that someone had messed up and failed to deal with the matter. Wether it was the person I initially reported it to, or whoever deals with cashline disputes outside of the branch.
If I am correct, isn't it in everyones interest to find out how this happened?

Since I was £100 down when I checked minutes after trying to withdraw the cash, does the atm owner have the ability to delete a transaction from, and reimburse funds to my account?

Does my bank have full responsibility for investigating the dispute, or does some responsibility lie with the atm operator?

Shouldn’t you have a record of who you complaint to and furthermore, shouldn’t you know if your balance is correct or 100 quid down?

I presume with next day’s update the erroneous entry had fallen away, which was probably before a member of staff had a look at the account. As the cause of the 'disput' had disappeared, there was no action to be taken.

It probably should have show up as a deduction and then as a credit, but the result is the same.

Cash machines are pretty smart, they normally correct the error overnight themselves. If this didn't happen, it is down to the ATM operator to investigate and get back to your bank, which can take a while.
