Agreed, if someone wants to be in to your case they can easily get in, a step up from the cable tie/string idea is TamperSeal which seals the bag and to some extent deters entry but more importantly lets you know if anyone has been in your bag.
I'd be in and out of that bag in seconds without any trace that i'd be there. Utter waste of money.Live each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -

In Crete airport they have a machine where you can get your luggage wrapped in cling film for 7 euros, this is supposed to prevent theft. Unfortunately a couple who had just had their baggage cling filmed had just realised that their passports were inside and were blaming each other whilst ripping yards of cling film from their cases. There were many comments and smirks from passers by, and it cheered up many people on their return journey.0

We went to Malta 2/3 years ago and always use color coded padlocks and keys always easier to match them together, however when we arrived home instead of a red padlock we had a normal brass one in its place ,nothing of value in there but cost us a new suitcase though.
So don't bother locking them they will get in anyway ware there's a will ...........0
