Final bill from old suppliers when switching

We are considering switching after about 2+ years with Sainsbury's EDF Energy.
The main reason being that, not only has our monthly DD gone up dramatically for our electric, but also, we are on a 'dual fuel' account for our gas but 'standard' account for electric?
To be honest it's been confusing me for ages as I have tried to get to grips with whether or not we're paying too much, reading the meter and trying to work out the 'pay this much for the 1st 'so many' kw/hs and this much for 'the rest' ... (?!).

We've finally decided to switch, partly to get a better, more straightforward account for both G & E and to hopefully pay 'a bit' less than we are now.

The up-shot of my comments is that whenever we have switched in the past we have always had a huge final bill from our 'current' supplier before switching, which we struggle to pay, before actually switching. This has made me postpone our switch this time.
Do we all get these huge bills before switching or am I being naive?

I would contact your current supplier directly, give them a meter reading and see how much you are either in credit or debt by - this should give you a guide as to whether your final bill will be an average month's charges or much more.

No, most people do not have such bills. Most people read their meters so adjust the payment before this stage. Alternatively, they read their meters when they want to switch and cough up any money owing. Or look forward to the large rebate.

'In the past' is a telling phrase. If this has happened before why have you not chosen before now to take the time to work out how to connect the readings on your meters with the payments you are making?
