Does anyone have a sluggery?

I bought a wormery from a boot sale a few weeks back. Its the large bin type with a sealed lid. Havent got around to getting any worms yet as the first two shops I tried were sea bait shops so didnt carry the right worms???.

Anyway I recall reading that Bob Flowerdew has an island in the middle of his pond he chucks on any slugs and snails he finds and they eat nettles etc.

Wonder if anyone had tried using slugs and snails in a wormery with or instead of using worms.

At the moment I am using a catapult to fling the things great distances when I find them but I dont want to fall out with the neighbours so am working on this as a plan B.

Thanks in advance.

That's interesting. Most slugs types eat earthworms and that's the reason why I keep them well clear of my wormery and compost heap. Earthworms are far more valuable when it comes to eating waste and turning it into compost and fertilising liquid.

Neither do I want ANYTHING to eat my nettle patch because nettles are such a key part of gardening - they attract wildlife (especially aphid-eating ladybirds), they make an excellent fertiliser and they act as an accelerant on the compost heap.

I have but one use for slugs. I place them in a dish of grit and gravel, high up on a bird table. The grit stops them from escaping and the birds love 'em.

The slugs in my garden ignore leaves and choose only ripe strawberries. Amazing that a creature with a pinhead brain and no backbone can be such a gourmet. Kill em all I say.

Joel, the best place to get the right worms from is http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/. I bought my wormery from them, and they also sell the worm feed - you don't have to use it but it makes for a better environment for the worms and the composting process is quicker.

Kay, I'm with you on the nettles, but doesn't the fertiliser stink?? Does wonders for my plants though so I am going to keep going with it. May I ask how you use them in your compost heap? Thanks :)

When I go out walking I take my gardening gloves and a plastic bag to pick stinging nettles. When I get them home, I make a hole in the centre of my compost heap, tear up the nettles and stick them in the hole. Within a day, the compost heap starts to fry because the nettles heat up the mixture. (Nettles are far more powerful than urine in getting the compost heap going).

As soon as it cools, I stir it around with a big stick getting the sides to the middle and ...... it heats up again.

When the compost heaps stops heating up I know that the nettles have done their work and have started to rot, so I go for a walk to gather more supplies. :j

    What a great money saver!

If you can get a hessian bag, fill it with nettles and hang it in your water butt by a rope. Swizzel it round every couple of days and it'll be great fertiliser....

All slugs must die, I love that bird table idea :)
