Bosch Washing Machine Problem

I have a Bosch Maxx WFL 2450, about 10 years old. It's stopped spinning or running any washing cycles. It will fill, drain and pump out fine, but do nothing that requires the drum to rotate. There is no visible obstruction within the drum, the drum rotates freely by hand, and I've removed the drain hatch and checked for obstructions in the pump impeller-all OK. It powers up when switched on, and the relevant lights come on on the control panel.
I'm guessing it could just be drive belt failure or slippage-can anyone make any other suggestions?
If it is just the drive side, is it worth fixing on such an old machine? Approx cost? It has had a lot of use in 10 years, but never had a single fault with it until now.

  • Hi,

does the drum spin freely or can you feel resistance, if no resistance then you it's the belt.

Does it spin on a spin cycle ?
A lot of problems with the Bosch and drum not rotating on a cycle seems to be the brushes.
But i would have said the same as frugalmacdugal the belt has broke.

the drum turns as it normally would, i.e. a bit of resistance. Does that mean the belt is not broken?
I've tried a spin cycle, and a normal wash cycle. No spin, and it won't advance the wash cycle beyond the fill stage (i.e. the point at which the drum should start rotating to tumble the washing).

  • Hi,

well if you can feel a bit of resistance then it would suggest the belt is ok, can you get the back or top off to have a look, if so then I'll agree with imho and go for brushes.

A quick Google does seem to concur that it's likely to be the brushes-only about £7.50 for a pair on ebay/espares, so worth a try if I can fit them myself. thanks guys.

Macman - its relatively easy provided you have the muscle to move the machine around and drop it on to its side. The motor comes out with a bit of coaxing of the retaining bolts and the brushes go in easily enough. We had the same problem with ours - stopped mid cycle and just pumped out. Swapped the brushes in about an hour on a Saturday morning and its back to working fine.

Turned out it was the brushes. I decided not to change them myself, cost me £62 which was very reasonable. However I've watched how he did it and feel confident to tackle them myself should they go again in ten years time...thanks to all for the advice.
Wife wanted to just chuck the machine, so I reckon I've saved at least £300.

eh, do you not think that after 10 years you wife was hoping that it was at last dead, and she would get a brand new one, not very money saving though, but with the £300 saved you can have a wee holiday. ;)

It's done her very well for 10 years, so it can do another 10 I hope!
