DIY Damp Proofing

Hello there,
Has anyone done their own Damp Proofing? We have some damp in our kitchen and it will cost about £575 plus vat to fix it.
We are a little short of cash right now as we also have our chimney to fix and a new boiler etc to put in.
Is it o.k to do this ourselves. My neighbour told me today that a friend did her own and I thought I would ask here whether this could be an option.
Thanks!

Is it rising damp? If so you could install a
electro osmosis damp proof course or a
chemical damp proof course
The electro osmosis is better than the chemical in my opinion.0 -
