Ethernet port on my Laptop.

Hi all, I'm having a problem setting up my new router, when I connect the yellow ethernet cable to my laptop port, the laptop doesn't connect to router as it should. AOL have advised me, after checks, to either get a friends laptop and configure new router with that, or go see a computer technictian (sp) with laptop who can connect something to said port which will fix the problem with it.
Now my question is, is there a programme online that I can download that will fix said problem?
Any advice appreciated guys, tia Paul.

There are quite a few things that could be wrong, but start with a check that the hardware in the laptop is working normally.
If you look in Control Panel, System, Hardware (the location varies a bit depending on what version of Windows you have), is the network interface shown as working normally?0 -
Thanks fwor, just had a look and its comes back as "this device is working properly" ??:cool:0

try rolling back the driver for it....right-click on it in device manager and select roll back driver......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Have you used the port before ? It might be setup as Domain (for work) or fixed IP addressing. Make sure its set to "Home" (Vista/Win7) and using DHCP.0
