Laptop connection to modem is weak

I have a Dell laptop and a Netgear modem.
The connection between the modem and the back of the laptop often does not work and either I cannot connect or it will go off in middle of working on a website.
As far as I can tell, the intermittent fault is in the back of the laptop. I have used a new linking wire (sorry, don't know the correct term) but this makes no difference.
Is this problem usual?
Any help welcomed
