How do I find out where a giro came from?

Hey,
I am not sure I am posting this in the right place, please move if needs be.

I had a giro playment made into my bank from Student Loans Co with a reference number. Now I am not sure who this is from. I have a career development loan with Barclays but they do not owe me any other payments personally, just ones they are meant to pay directly to my university. I am not sure if this money has even come from Barclays with the name saying Student Loans Co. I called my bank and spoke to a call centre who could not give me any other info. Can anyone help? I need to know how I get more detail about the origin of the payment or what a career development loan payment from Barclays would look like as a giro on a bank statement. I am just worried that it was meant to go to the university and hasn't. I tried to call Barclays but the dept is closed for the weekend. Any help would be great!

Very few - if any - organisations actually use the bank giro system to credit people's accounts with - are you sure that it came in this way, and not by a BACS credit?

If it says that it's from the SLC, then they are most likely the people who sent it. If it was from Barclays, then they wouldn't put Student Loans Company as a reference for the payment.

Did you apply for financial support for your study fees at all? I applied for a refund on my course fees before and got about £200 paid into my bank account (in addition to the refund) that I wasn't expecting but apparently was given to people who qualified for free tuition.

Thanks for the replies - it is definitely a giro, it says so in the transaction description. I assume it is from the student loans company now as I am pretty sure, like you say rb10, that if it was from Barclay's it would say Barclay's.

Pound - I have been given a diasbled student's allowance which I know comes from SLC but I am pretty sure that they do not give out any cash as such and that the equiptment I will be getting is all provided by certain companies and any money I do get is given as reimbursement when I give reciepts. Hmmmm so I am still not sure what it is!! I need to get through to SLC I think. It would be lovely if it was for me but I have a feeling it's a mistake.

Your bank should definitely be able to trace the payment right through their accounting system, back through the banks' clearing system to find out which bank paid it. That bank should then contact their customer who sent the money for more details.

Don't believe your bank if they tell you they can't help. All banks have access to this sort of info about money paid to them.

Thanks Linda, it seemed ridiculous to me that they couldn't tell me more than was on my statement. It was a call centre in another country though and the woman was rather rude. I think I will speak to SLC on Monday and then if that doesn't help I will go into the bank. I think it must have come from the SLC now but still not sure why.

Just to report back, the money was from the DSA but it seems it has been given to me in error. They are looking into it but will probably take it back. I am not surprised, it would have been lovely if it was for me but glad I looked into it and didn't get a letter in 6 months asking for it back!!!

Well done for getting it sorted, shame it wasn't a genuine windfall though :(:(
