Laptop infected - can't run any program

Everything I try to run it says that the file is infected and I need to purchase some antivirus software.
I started to follow the instructions on malware removal using a pen drive - but it won't even let me run that file.
I'd rather try and fix it myself than take it to a shop - and hopefully not have to wipe the HD clean.
Is it safe to move some of my spreadsheet files to the pen drive - or will virus follow?
It will let me run explorer by the way.

Your probably better to format/install windows again, As I personaly dont think any virus removal program will 100% remove it.0

This is what I would do:
1. Copy any data files (no prgarms to a pen drive)
2. Buy Windows CD if yu don't have one (Only around £60 from Tesco's).
3. Wipe the disk completely on the Laptop and re-install.
4. Install good Virus Scanner and malware checker.
5. Scan your Pen drive with data for any infection.
Hope this helps.:T:T:T:T:T:T:T0 -
Oh forgot to mention. You can try removal but if you only have few data files then best to re-install. A fresh build will also speed up your machine.:T:T:T:T:T:T:T0

download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. RKill.exe
RKill.com
RKill.scr
RKill.pif- There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
- Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
- You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.
- You will know one ran when a box opens up with a report
