Hi all,
My son has just returned from working abroad for 5 years, and wants a current account. (he is 27) Halifax says he can't have one as he does not have a credit history.
Are there any banks that would give him one??
I am sure there is someone here who will know the answer!

Chances are he will only be able to get a Basic Bank account. Get him to try Barclays Cash Card Account. You can get a Visa Debit card with it and can set up Direct Debits and Standing Orders and have all the functionality of a full current account. You just don't get a cheque book or overdraft with it.
This account isn't credit scored so I don't see why they won't let him have one. The account has to be opened in branch though.
Also, make sure he's put back on the electoral roll as soon as possible as this will definitely hinder any future application for credit. Once he's on, he could try applying for a Capital One Classic credit card which will start out with a very low limit (I started with £100) which if run properly will help him build up a credit score so in a year or two he will have less trouble getting more mainstream credit.Remember this: nothing worth doing is easy.0
